Way back in the day, right out of college when Josh and I started dating I remember meal prepping with him at his apartment. The kid ate plain chicken, plain broccoli, plain rice…PLAIN EVERYTHING.

That is no way to live your life, my friends. These days, our meal prep is still pretty simple, but we actually use things like sauces and seasonings instead of suffering through boring meats and veggies. If you’re interested in a video of how we prep, you can watch that here.

For most people starting out tracking macros, keeping your foods simple is necessary instead of making complex recipes for every meal. Not to say that’s not doable, but when you’re learning, simplicity is definitely less stressful.

So we wanted to share some of our favorite seasoning, spices + combinations in this post for you to hopefully give you a basic list of ways to switch up your typical prep or at least make your food taste a little better.


Stubbs BBQ Sauce: Josh loves this on chicken lately!

Frank’s Red Hot OR Frank’s Wing Sauce: If you’ve made our buffalo chicken meatballs you already know about the Wing Sauce. We love using regular hot sauce too though.

Trader Joe’s Sweet Chili Sauce: We love this for stir-fry nights or even on chicken to throw in a rice bowl.

Mango Salsa: We usually grab this from our local grocery, but I know TJ’s has it as well. Perfect summer salsa for burgers, eggs or even on salad!


Trader Joe’s Everything But The Bagel Seasoning: I put this on absolutely EVERYTHING…it’s great on eggs, avocado toast, on a rice bowl, you name it. Even if the food is already seasoned, this is a great last-minute topper for a little extra something.

Trader Joe’s Onion Salt: Perfect on buttery toast, eggs or even a sandwich.

Trader Joe’s Chili Lime: PERFECT on tacos, ground beef or even a basic chili recipe in the crockpot.

Mrs. Dash Blends: If you’re looking for a lower sodium option the Mrs. Dash line has some great seasonings! Lemon Garlic is a favorite over here!

Flavor God: These have been a favorite in our house for years and they have only gotten more flavors over time! Spicy Everything, Honey BBQ, Pizza + Taco Tuesday are all amazing!

Lastly, we’ll finish with what we’ve dubbed “Frank’s Holy Grail”. Frank is my Dad, and really the only true “chef” in the family who can cook without recipes, cookbooks or any added guidance. When we were younger, we called his chicken using this blend “Daddy’s Chicken”…and so did all of our friends haha.


Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO)

Black Pepper

Garlic Powder

Kosher Salt

You can literally put this combo on ANYTHING from chicken, to beef, to veggies…it just works!
