How do you start each day? The alarm goes off, your eyes open… What comes next? Maybe you smash the snooze button and roll over. Perhaps you open social media and scroll through for ten minutes. What are your first thoughts? “I really don’t want to go to work today.” Or, “I know I said I would help her move, but I really don’t feel like it.” Unless it’s the weekend, or some other day off, how often do you feel rejuvenated and excited to start the day when you wake up in the morning? And that’s not by accident.. As we check-in with clients, we notice certain trends that are common when they have a rough week. That’s one of the great things about having a coach, they can point things out that you wouldn’t typically realize. One of those trends is the way we look at certain events or situations.
How often do you have something come up at work where everyone is on edge? Maybe a new deal came through, or there’s a deadline that has to be met. So all the buzz around the office is about how this is going to suck, or you can kiss your social life good bye for the next 3 weeks. Then you get through it and realize, it really wasn’t that bad. You spent more time stressing about the idea of how much it was going to suck than you did with it actually sucking..
Let’s scale that down to a day to day level. Your roommates (or kids) never wash their dishes. The plates stack like towers in your sink. Every time someone walks by, you delicately balance the next utensil on top. Does it last a few days or a week before someone finally caves? You spend all that time thinking, “I’m not doing it,” and stressing about whose turn it is. But when you finally give in and do it, you realize it only took about five minutes and all that stress is gone. It really wasn’t a big deal.
The solution to most of our problems and stressors is SO EASY that it is completely overlooked. All you have to do to change the perspective on any situation is change the way that you think about it. Trick yourself into being in a great mood by saturating yourself with positivity and a positive outlook. It can be as simple as a morning mantra. You wake up and repeat to yourself, “It’s going to be a great day. It’s going to be a great day.” Not in a creepy, chanting type of way. But in an upbeat, believable way where you actually convince yourself that it’s going to be a great day.
That’s not working for you? Ok, how about starting and ending each day by listing 3 things that you’re grateful for. “I am healthy. I have a loving family. I have a roof over my head.” Turn gratitude into positivity and pay it forward with compassion towards others. There are so many ways you can go with this!
Give yourself just a few minutes to meditate and change the way you feel. There are tons of methods, so just find the one that you enjoy most. It truly is a game-changer.
Translating it into real life
Once you’ve got the morning routine down, it’s all about maintaining it throughout the day. This is the challenging part. We have more stressors once we are out in the real world compared to the mantras we just went over in our bedroom.. Someone cut us off on the highway, our boss has unrealistic expectations, we’re having trouble in a relationship. This is where taking a few moments to breathe and put everything in perspective makes the difference. We could react in the moment, using the emotion that just came over us. But we might regret that later. Instead, take a few moments to step back, breathe, and calm down. Then, consider the task at hand and remember your purpose is to be a good human being. This will lead you to making the right choices.
Our actions determine our consequences in life, good or bad. But our thoughts determine our actions. So master your thoughts and you won’t even believe the positive outlook you create for yourself in every aspect of your life.
