We’ve Been There
We’ve all attempted a sober month, probably after a long bender that made us seriously questions our most recent life decisions. But have you ever seriously contemplated cutting out the booze for good? That time you woke up with a crazy hangover and declared you were never drinking again DOES NOT count! I’m talking about actually weighing your goals out and giving serious thought to whether alcohol was holding you back. I’ll tell you this, when I was in college, the thought never crossed my mind. I could be out all night and hop out of bed on three hours of sleep, hit the gym and start my day. But that would probably have been followed by a four hour nap at some point!
It really never crossed my mind until I started dealing with health issues shortly after my 21st birthday.. Pretty ironic that I never truly considered quitting drinking until just AFTER I turned 21. My reasons for stopping drinking then and continuing to not drink now are completely different. So let’s go over why it was so hard to stop drinking, and why ultimately I decided the benefits outweighed those factors.
Depending on where you are in your life, the decision to stop drinking alcohol may or may not seem realistic to you. But regardless of your current stage, the concerns are more or less the same. The biggest piece is usually your social life.
“But everybody drinks!”
It is very difficult to be the only sober person in the room. The job of designated driver is not usually sought out. Being sober in a party full of drunk people is like walking around in a separate universe from everyone else. You see literally see and hear things differently than they do. That’s why, usually, if you know you can’t drink then you don’t bother going.
“How else am I supposed to relax after work?”
Many people use a drink, or five, at the end of the day to unwind. Your boss is a dick, you work too many hours, your co-workers are useless. I get it, life is rough sometimes. A drink can definitely take the edge off. But there are other ways to accomplish the same objective.
“The bar is the only place I get to see my friends.”
As we get older, get-togethers become tougher and tougher. The people we used to live with we see once a month if we’re lucky. Going out is where you get to catch up and let loose a little bit.
DOING IT FOR YOURSELF
When you’re trying to make certain changes to better your life, it’s ok to be a little selfish. We often stretch ourselves thin trying to please others, so when we deem something important to ourselves, it’s important to take everything else out of the equation for a moment. You aren’t going to make the best decision for yourself if you’re thinking about everyone else’s reaction to it.
Start by weighing the things you want most versus what you’d have to give up to attain it. Are you ok with missing the big parties, or going there and being able to stay sober while you’re there? Can you find other things to do with your friends besides meeting up at the bar? Maybe take up golf or start a weekly poker game. Your friends can still drink if they choose to during these activities but you are also entertained and kept busy without a drink in your hand. The point here is that you have options, you just have to open your mind a little.
Why We Do It
Alessandra and I come from different, and yet still similar, backgrounds. For the sake of this conversation, we are going to keep everything in the present.
Seeing friends can be hard nowadays, and often times reasons really just sound like excuses when you can’t meet up. What started as a side business (SD Evolution) has now become a full-time gig. In order to keep it that way, we have to dedicate a lot of time and energy to keeping our clients happy and continuing to build and sustain that growth via multiple channels.
Being self-employed can be a blessing and a curse. You make your own schedule, but you are also your own motivated and you are required to hold yourself accountable. No one is going to yell at you for not getting your work done, but you’re bank account will when you stop making money. Half-ass effort equals half-ass results. 100% effort is required to succeed. It’s pretty hard to give 100% when you’re waking up hungover and spend half the day feeling like garbage. Even if you do get yourself to work, you aren’t going to be giving your clients the best of what you have to offer. That’s not fair to your clients and it will reflect in your business.
All that is great but maybe the biggest reason we don’t drink is that we don’t need to be drunk to have fun! We hike, workout, travel, and play sports! There are so many other things going on in our life that we don’t need to drink to escape. Life is good!
Leading By Example
We also practice every bit of what we teach. We won’t tell you to do something that we can’t do ourselves. And in order to achieve the highest levels of health and fitness, you have to be mindful of what you put into your body. Alcohol is a toxin. It does not help with performance. It does not improve your physique. In fact, it literally does the exact opposite. So what purpose does it serve us? None.
Alcohol can be fun, but it can also be pretty stressful. You leave yourself open to a lot more drama when alcohol is a centerpiece in your life. Drinking impairs your judgement and many bad decisions can come from it. I can’t say that quitting drinking is going to solve all of your problems, but it can eliminate the potential of many.
Being sober puts us in the best position to succeed in all aspects of our lives. We are able to make clear, well-thought out decisions. It gives us the ability to put our best foot forward on a daily basis. We are not only teaching, but living a happy and healthy lifestyle.
Cutting alcohol may not be something you decide to do. It’s definitely not something that you have to do. There are plenty of successful people who drink. We just choose not to and that’s the best decision for US! Only you can decide what the best decision is for YOURSELF!
